Tips for Using Domain Availability Checker
- Available in RDAP does not always mean purchasable at the standard price. Registries reserve some names and price others as premium — the registrar checkout is the final word.
- Availability says nothing about trademarks. A name can be free to register and still infringe someone's mark, which is a far more expensive problem than a taken domain.
- Hyphens and numbers make a domain harder to say aloud and easier to mistype. If your only option is brand-name-2.com, consider a different extension instead.

What is RDAP and how is it different from WHOIS?
RDAP is the Registration Data Access Protocol, standardised in RFC 7482 and 7483 as the successor to WHOIS. WHOIS returned unstructured text in whatever format each registry chose, which made it fragile to parse and inconsistent to read. RDAP returns structured JSON over HTTPS with a standardised schema, supports internationalised data properly, and has a defined access-control model for personal information under GDPR. All gTLD registries have been required to support it since 2019.
Why does it say "unknown" for some extensions?
Not every extension publishes usable RDAP data. Many country-code TLDs — .de, .uk, .in and others — either run no RDAP server or deliberately return minimal responses, because ccTLD registries are governed by their own national policies rather than ICANN contracts. Occasionally a registry is simply slow or rate-limiting. In either case the honest answer is that availability could not be confirmed, which is what "unknown" means. Check those at a registrar.
